During pregnancy, insulin function is slightly disrupted due to various hormones produced by the placenta or umbilical cord. This condition is known as insulin resistance.
These hormones will increase as the uterus grows. Due to this condition, insulin resistance will occur. Normally, the pancreas responds by producing additional insulin to deal with that resistance. If it fails, then diabetes during pregnancy or Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) will occur.
